Jimmy undergoes a complex 23-hour acoustic neuroma resection surgery by Derek Shepherd. The tumor had progressed significantly during the delay caused by Derek's plane crash recovery, increasing surgical risks. The surgery initially appears to cause facial nerve damage but Jimmy ultimately retains facial function.
