An 8-year-old boy is accidentally shot by his friend Peter while playing with an unlocked gun. The bullet penetrates his abdomen and shatters his L1 vertebra, causing fragments in the spinal canal and a CSF leak. During surgery to decompress the spinal cord, he experiences cardiac instability requiring defibrillation, which causes spinal movement and results in permanent paraplegia.
