Hereditary intracranial berry aneurysm forms in the brain stem and presses on nerves controlling heart rate and other autonomic functions. As the patient ages, it enlarges until it stops signals from brain to heart, causing apparent cardiac death. The condition is inherited across four generations (great-grandfather, grandfather, father, and patient), all dying around age 40 from presumed heart problems.
