Also known as: Spinal cord cyst from trauma
Alice Tanner presents with seizures, pain, sweating, and eventually paralysis. After initially suspecting mercury poisoning, pheochromocytoma, and lupus, the team discovers a slowly growing syrinx in her spinal column from a 15-year-old car accident. The syrinx has been pressing against her spinal cord, causing her progressive symptoms and recent paralysis.
Also known as: Depression
Alice attempted suicide by gunshot, suffered a seizure before completing the act, and continues expressing desire to die throughout her hospitalization. Her depression stems from unresolved guilt over her son's death in a car accident 15 years prior, which she blamed herself for.
Also known as: Full-thickness burns
Alice suffers severe burns to her right leg during an MRI when the magnetic field superheats three metal screws she failed to disclose from a previous skiing accident (actually the car crash). The burns are severe enough to rupture skin and require surgical replacement of the screws.
Also known as: Seizure
Alice experiences seizures as a presenting symptom, initially during her suicide attempt and later monitored in the hospital. The seizures are ultimately determined to be caused by the syringomyelia rather than being a primary seizure disorder.
Also known as: Brain aneurysm
House claims Alice's son died from a brain aneurysm that ruptured before the car crash, absolving her of guilt. However, this is revealed to be a lie House told to motivate Alice to accept treatment.
