Also known as: Low oxygen levels
A newborn presents with breathing problems and low oxygen saturation immediately after birth. Initially suspected to be lung-related, but later discovered to be caused by metastatic melanoma from her mother.
Also known as: Skin cancer that has spread
The mother unknowingly transmitted melanoma to her baby in utero. A mole under her fingernail is identified as the primary melanoma site, which had metastasized to the baby's liver.
Also known as: Small cell lung cancer
The mother is discovered to have oat cell lung cancer that is paradoxically producing antibodies that treat both her melanoma and her baby's metastatic melanoma. She delays surgery to continue providing therapeutic blood to her newborn, ultimately dying from a massive pulmonary embolism.
Also known as: Liver failure
The newborn develops progressive liver failure with elevated liver enzymes, coagulopathy, and bleeding from puncture sites. Ultimately caused by metastatic melanoma to the liver transmitted from her mother in utero.
Also known as: Blood clot in lung
The mother dies suddenly from a massive pulmonary embolism, a complication of her untreated lung cancer which caused hypercoagulability. This occurs after she delays her cancer surgery to continue providing therapeutic blood to her baby.
