Also known as: Toxic gas poisoning
Devon is found collapsed and unconscious after inhaling hydrogen sulfide gas in the hospital basement casting room. He presents with seizures, profound metabolic acidosis, respiratory distress, and altered mental status. The gas exposure also affects another patient, Winston Robards, who was exposed while trying to rescue Devon.
Also known as: Heart valve infection
Janey, a college student with a history of IV drug use, presents with an infected prosthetic aortic valve following an apparent overdose. The infection spreads to her brain causing a mycotic aneurysm, and her valve deteriorates requiring emergency replacement surgery. Her case drives ethical debates about treating patients with addiction.
Also known as: Infected brain aneurysm
As a complication of Janey's endocarditis, bacteria from her infected heart valve travels to her brain and forms an aneurysm in her anterior cerebral artery. The aneurysm causes headaches, vision problems, and begins to leak, requiring emergency neurosurgical repair before her heart valve replacement.
Also known as: Synthetic cannabinoid overdose
Janey is brought to the ER unresponsive after taking a combination of substances including opiates and a designer drug synthesized by her friend Trevor. She requires multiple doses of Narcan to reverse the overdose and regain consciousness.
Also known as: Broken wrist
Winston, a blind patient, comes to the ER for a fractured wrist requiring a cast. When Devon doesn't return after sending him for casting, Winston goes looking for him and discovers Devon collapsed from hydrogen sulfide poisoning. Winston is also exposed to the gas while attempting rescue but receives limited exposure.
