Hydrocephalus

Six-month-old Zola is brought in with spina bifida requiring surgical repair. Derek and Alex discover she has developed hydrocephalus requiring shunt placement before the planned spinal surgery. Derek becomes attached to her and proposes adoption.

Zola develops hydrocephalus as a complication of spina bifida, causing fluid build-up in the brain and crying. Derek successfully places a shunt to drain the fluid, which stops her crying and postpones the spinal surgery.

Young patient Kondo has pentalogy of Cantrell with a heart defect and exposed heart. Teddy repairs the ventricular septal defect while Mark reconstructs the sternum. Cristina assists with the complex adhesions where skin has grown onto heart muscle.
